i saw this gig after the drummers collective thing in new york. this was the first nite and i think the first time that weckl and wooten had played together.
the first set was awesome as you can imagine especially victor wooten but i felt weckl was too busy. literally every bar there was a feel and when playing mike sterns music and with a bass player like victor more groove is needed. i can imagine that dennis chambers and victor would possibly make a better team. while victor took his solo dave and the band had to pick there jaws up off the floor, i didnt look like dave had ever seen anything like that before.
the second set however was a different story. the band had warmed up and they all played fantastically. iive seen mike about 3 times and he took the nicest solo i have seen him do and the band clapped him. once again victor soloed and brought the house down and weckl had 2 solos in which he played very similar to the collective gig.....unbelievable. chops chops chops. and he never seems to repeat anything!!! mike stern stopped to clap daves solo. the played slightly different solngs second set which was nice cause i asked mike if he could. they also played my favourite ballard called "wing and prayer" which was so intense and beautifully played it lasted for like 10 mins. the band did an encore.....the usual encore where mike pays the tune that speeds up to ridiculous speeds........
a monster band....not forgetting the sax player bob fransenchini who was also brilliant.........
bear in mind this was the first nite where victor was READING the charts and had never played with weckl before........think what they'll be like by staurday!!!!!
catch them if you can
